When Swimmers Ran From Danger, Viral Picture Captures Lifeguard Dashing ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Towards the Scene.
Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as inhabitant of Bondi, views the iconic shoreline as her own backyard. On that particular Sunday evening, she, like many others in the area, heard loud noises ringing out around the suburb.
“We all thought the same, but I thought it was daylight and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. She left her home, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore signaled trouble had occurred.
As she stood on the street, talking to a pair who had rushed up the incline still dripping wet, she noticed someone approaching behind her. The person was a beach patrol officer, dashing in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.
“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I spotted this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. It was just him moving in the direction that everyone was trying to get away from, carrying that big kit and barefoot … He moved into something that undoubtedly every part of you would signal you to run in the opposite direction.
“Just no hesitation, but just totally maximum effort sprinting.”
A Powerful Moment of Bravery In the Wake of Crisis
The photo taken by Ching of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as a prime example of moments of valour in the aftermath of the terror attack.
Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to help emergency personnel, officers and ambulance crews treating numerous the injured.

Doolan’s actions was part of a broader narrative to be shared by the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse adjacent to the site of the incident becoming a makeshift treatment center. “We are grateful all for your supportive words and support. We are touched by the kindness shown towards our personnel,” the organization wrote. “In time, we will recount our experiences in the belief that it aids those affected.”
Council Commendation
Waverley council, the local authority that employs many professional beach safety officers, remarked that the crew performed exceptionally from the instant the shooting started right into late that nighttime.
