The former president indicated that a meeting could occur with recently elected mayor Zohran Mamdani, telling reporters that Mamdani “would like to meet with us”, adding, “we will arrange a meeting” although they hold opposing views who have shared sharp words.
Trump’s Statement
“He would like to come to Washington and meet, and we’ll work something out,” Trump declared Sunday evening, referring to Mamdani, the young progressive politician successful in his bid for mayor in recent weeks. “Our goal is New York’s success.”
Mayor-Elect’s Stance
His team remained silent regarding Trump’s remarks, but during recent media appearances Mamdani said that communication with Washington was planned before assuming leadership “since this partnership that will be critical to the success of the city”.
“My approach will be hands-on,” Mamdani said. “Driven by my commitment toward millions of New Yorkers as their elected leader, it is important that you are open to working with anyone no matter what disagreements you may have.”
Asked what he would tell Trump, the mayor-elect responded: “I represent every city dweller residing in the five boroughs, and when opportunities for cooperation arise towards that end, I’m ready, and if it’s to the expense of those New Yorkers, I will oppose it.”
Contentious History
Possible discussions between these figures occurs despite previous condemnation throughout the election period, labeling him radically progressive, warning about withholding resources from the city if he won, and raising the prospect of stripping Mamdani of his citizenship – which the mayor-elect denounced as both undemocratic and dangerous but an attempt to send a message to every New Yorker who refuses to hide: political activism brings retaliation.”
Trump also endorsed Mamdani’s opponent the previous state executive, who ran an independent campaign for mayor unsuccessful in party nomination.
Campaign Rhetoric
Throughout the race, Mamdani forcefully criticized Trump and his policies, specifically regarding border policies. But, the mayor-elect consistently stated that if elected, cooperation with Washington would occur when benefiting New Yorkers financially throughout the boroughs.
Election Night Comments
During his acceptance address, the mayor-elect stated “if any entity could illustrate the country’s disappointment with Trump strategies for opposition, New York represents his origins”, adding that “if there is any way to terrify a despot requires eliminating the circumstances that facilitated his rise.”
“Such methods oppose the president; it prevents future similar figures” the mayor-elect elaborated. “So, President Trump, assuming you are viewing, consider this brief statement: Increase the sound level.”Later in the speech, he said: “So hear me, Mr. Trump, when I say this: targeting any individual you will have to get through all of us.”
Swearing-In Schedule
Official duties will commence as New York City’s 111th mayor the first day of January.
