Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
