Demonstrating the personal bonds that exist beneath the surface of international cricket, Travis Head has revealed he sent a private message of support to England's Ben Duckett.
The gesture came after Duckett was subjected to a wave of criticism on social media.
Online Video Ignited Debate
The situation began when unconfirmed video clips circulated online.
The footage purportedly showed Duckett, seemingly intoxicated, in a tetchy late-night exchange with a fan.
This occurred during the team's time off in Noosa, thrusting the opening batter in an unwanted spotlight.
England Management Addressed Conduct
Earlier that day, England's managing director, Rob Key, had spoken out.
He called excessive drinking "completely unacceptable" and stated he would be looking into reports from the trip.
“I get along with Ducky well, I reached out to him to see if he was going alright,” Head stated.
He said this at the MCG following England's two-day victory in the Melbourne Test.
An Appeal for Understanding
Head stressed the human element of the situation. "Cricketers are people too. What you do in personal time is up to you."
He acknowledged the public scrutiny of their lives but felt the reaction was "a bit stiff [unfair]."
"Everyone made a lot more out of it that there should have been." Head continued. "I reckon it was an England fan."
Sharing his perspective, the batsman said, "I don’t think it was any real issue."
He suggested that "With long breaks between matches, the media needs topics to discuss."
Stokes Backs His Player
Earlier, England captain Ben Stokes had stood by Duckett.
In an emotional press conference before the fourth Test, Stokes asked for "understanding" towards his teammate.
Moving Forward
During the match, Duckett scored 34 crucial runs in England's successful chase of 175.
After the match, he shared online, stating, "Amazing end to a pretty tough week."
Head expressed hope for longer cricket in the next Test, joking, "Maybe if the game lasts longer, there will be fewer off-field stories."
