The vehicles for the 2026 season are expected to be more compact, agile and eco-conscious relative to present-day cars.

F1 has unveiled the official language that will be used to describe the advanced features of its upcoming 2026 technical rules.

The championship is introducing what is arguably the most significant regulation change in its competitive history starting in 2026, featuring fresh chassis and power unit regulations and the required adoption of 100% sustainable fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which keep the 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid, boast a greatly enhanced energy storage, driving key advancements in the vehicles' aerodynamic design.

Over a race distance, pilots will tactically deploy battery power – sometimes even hot laps – to achieve the peak lap time.

Broad surveys were conducted with a diverse audience, including long-time followers and newcomers, to determine which phrases would improve understanding of the key features of the upcoming rules.

The stated goal was to render a series of complex features of the sport as accessible as possible for the global fanbase.

Consequently, initial designations for certain devices – such as "x-mode and z-mode" for the moveable wings – have been discarded in favour of straightforward terms that directly explain the actual function of the system.

What's the New Technology?

According to rule-makers that competitors will have greater control to determine tactics regarding power usage, harvesting, and saving energy.

The new regulations introduce a series of modes that will be visually displayed on broadcast screens to enhance the fans' insight of the strategic duel.

  • Attack Mode: This supersedes the current DRS. It provides a burst of extra electrical energy available when a car is close behind the leading car to facilitate an overtake.
  • Power Mode: This is a manual energy deployment from the ERS that can be utilized during attack or defence. It delivers the pilot full engine and battery energy at the push of a button.

Both of these crucial modes will have to be deployed strategically, as the overall battery capacity is capped.

  • Active Aerodynamics: Both the front and rear wings adjust their angles – spreading on the straights for reduced drag and higher speed, and closing in the bends for maximum downforce.
  • Recharge: Drivers can recharge the energy store with regenerative braking, or during partial power application at the end of straights or in sections where only reduced throttle is required.

What's Changing on the Cars?

The 2026 cars will be reduced in size and weight compared to the 2025 spec, with a distance between axles cut by 200mm to 3,400mm, car width cut by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the lowest permissible weight lowered by 30kg.

Overall downforce is projected to decrease by approximately a significant margin, although squads will naturally regain performance as they refine their designs.

Aerodynamic drag has been reduced by 40%. The vehicles will utilize adjustable aero systems – front and rear wings will move on the straights to improve speed and enhance velocity and click back into place for optimal grip in corners.

Wheels will continue to use 18-inch wheel rims, but the actual tyres will be narrower, by 25mm at the front and 30 millimetres on the rear axle.

2026 Engine Regulations

The 2026 engines will have an approximate 50-50 split in horsepower generated by the petrol engine and the battery and motor, up from about one-fifth electric power in the current formula.

The hybrid system is made less complex through the deletion of the Motor Generator Unit – Heat, the sophisticated and pricey component that generated electricity from the turbocharger.

Every car on the grid will be obliged to compete on carbon-neutral fuel, produced using plant-based materials or lab-created processes.
